THE UTILITY OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS
|
There are few features of life that unanimously and indiscriminately thread through all aspects of our shared experience but spatial information is one of them. By nature all items or characteristics have a relative location, and it’s increasingly possible to produce maps that analyze and potentially reveal non-assumed yet integral relations between them. From understanding how to most efficiently restore essential wetlands to mapping hot springs for a cross country road trip, Geographic Information Systems can do it all. Most importantly I see GIS as an irreplaceable tool to foster understanding between a diverse group of people and agencies because of its unmatched ability to display spatially referenced data in a clear, concise, and understandable manner. Through the integration of spatial information in future decisions we can collectively include a diversity of opinions and transparently plan a better future for all.

There are many components to GIS, but their essence can be explained by three foundational principles.
Finally, Who doesn't love a well designed map! When the information is pertinent, display is clear, and you leave with a satisfying sense of understanding. We can all benefit from further understanding and engaging in the world around us.
